Mind the Gapp

'Heart of Gold’ put me in the middle of the road. Traveling there soon became a bore, so I headed for the ditch.” – Neil Young, comments written for the liner notes of his 1977 compilation, Decade.

Book Completed: The Fate of the Day: The War for America, Fort Ticonderoga to Charleston, 1777-1780

This, as is the first book, “The British are Coming”, is fantastic. I’m always amazed at the intense struggle that both sides went through.

“I’m the champion”

This came up because I won the NCAA tourney bracket with the boys in 2024. Still applies…

Book Completed: Starship in the Stone by M.R. Forbes

As I was struggling with the biography of Robert E. Lee by Fitzhugh Lee I decided I needed a break and picked up this book.

Fun book, interesting concept. Give it a try.

Book Completed: General Lee: A Biography of Robert E. Lee

This book was written by Fitzhugh Lee who was also a player in the Civil War. My problem with the book is the treating Lee almost as infallible. He had some truly brilliant tactical battles but he was not infallible as we can see at Gettysburg.

Regardless, an interesting book.

Some books are harder than others

I’ve been reading a biography of Robert E. Lee, General Lee, A biography of Robert E. Lee, Author: Fitzhugh Lee, and man… it is a slog. I feel like I’ve been reading it forever and I’m half way done.

I don’t think the writing is bad but the bias towards Lee’s ‘genius’ is almost overwhelming at times.

Book completed: The Darkest Summer: Pusan and Inchon 1950: The Battles That Saved South Korea–and the Marines–from Extinction

I enjoyed this one. I knew that the drawdown of American forces after World War II was extreme but not this extreme. Also; what was MacArthur thinking in allowing forces to go up to the Yalu?!

Book completed: The Last Founding Father: James Monroe and a Nation’s Call to Greatness

This was a great book. I did not know much about James and Elizabeth Monroe. Wow. Louisiana Purchase negotiations, saving Lafayette’s wife during the French Revolution and so much more.

Here is the complete list for books read in 2025.

Book Completed: Hero of Two Worlds: The Marquis de Lafayette in the Age of Revolution

I did not know anything about Lafayette beyond his involvement in the American Revolution. In fact, I did not much about the French Revolution and the aftermath. Incredible life.
